10:00 hrs – A very intimate tradition in a family´s house and, a sweet-tasting
San Pedro, Teotihuacan, State of Mexico
We are going to drive to San Pedro Teotihuacan town (40 minutes from the city). There, we are going to visit a local family´s house (in a rural area). They opened the doors of their home and their very intimate lifestyle so we can appreciate the altar they set every year to welcome the souls of their beloved ones that have passed away. We are going to listen to the story of the family and their deceased ones. We are going to help actively to set their altar up and learn about its elements. Also, we are going to taste and share with them the traditional “Death Bread” (Pan de Muerto) with hot cocoa.
11:30 hrs – Visit a local Pantheon
San Pedro, Teotihuacan, State of Mexico
We are going to move to a different environment. A revolution of emotions is concentrated at the local pantheons, a mix of joy, music, celebration, and the pain of missing our loved ones. Traditionally, the families go to the pantheon on these days to spend time with their beloved deceased. The vibe turns into a very folkloric picture since you´ll see families seated around the graves, bringing some food, colorful flowers, marichi, norteños, or banda regional live music. Get into the context and connect to the vibe, first-hand the meaning of this day for the Mexican culture.
13:00 hrs – Pyramids of Teotihuacan
Zona Arqueologica, Teotihuacan, State of Mexico
We are going to go forward to the Teotihuacan Pyramids. Here you are going to learn about the history of the tradition from its roots (in the pre/Hispanic times). The tour allows you to understand the interpretation, sacrileges, and beliefs of death by our ancestors and let you observe the heritage they left to modern Mexican society.
Besides, you can climb to the top of the Pyramid of the sun, appreciate the landscapes, recharge your energy, and learn more about this exciting culture (climbing is temporally unavailable due to Covid but it is worthy to visit anyways).
15:30 hrs – Taste the Mexican cuisine
San Juan, Teotihuacan, State of Mexico
Finally, we are going to have lunch at a local restaurant focused on Mexican cuisine. The menu includes exotic ingredients eaten by the pre-Hispanic cultures (for those adventurous paladars) but also includes traditional options like tacos, guacamole, mole, tamales, etc, (there are options for the conservative ones).
